Christmas in the Middle Ages was very different to the festive holiday of today. In the Middle Ages, the festive period was a long, protracted occasion which lasted over a month and involved multiple feasts and libations.
From Martinmas to Twelfth Night, medieval Christmas was steeped in tradition, superstition and festivities. Peasants to kings, monks to anchorites, all levels of society partook in the festivities. So let us explore Christmas in the Middle Ages, where we will discuss the different feast dates, the traditions based around these feasts and how they fit into the context of Norwich and Norfolk in the Middle Ages.
