Daydreams by
Emma De Cruz
1st to 6th July

Daydreaming and escapism are the central themes of this exhibition, as well as Emma's broader artistic philosophy. She views her drawing practice not just as a means of creation, but as a form of travel - each piece offering the opportunity to build and inhabit new worlds. This approach allows her to transform the act of illustration into an exploratory journey, where both artist and viewer can discover unexpected territories of imagination. Music plays an incredibly significant role in Emma’s creative process, serving as both inspiration and companion during her artistic practice. This auditory influence often manifests in the rhythmic quality of her line work and the emotional resonance of her compositions. Her artwork draws from the rich tapestry of everyday life, reflecting the relationships she builds, the moments she observes, and the subtle interactions that define human experience. Her work serves as both documentation and transformation, taking the familiar and rendering it through a lens of wonder and possibility. Emma de Cruz is a Norwich-based illustrator whose intricate line drawings invite viewers into meticulously crafted worlds combining imagination and observation. Born in 1987 in London, Emma has cultivated a distinctive artistic voice that bridges the gap between everyday reality and fantastical escapism through a detailed, contemplative approach to illustration. Emma's artistic journey began in childhood with an innate love for drawing that has remained constant throughout her life. Her formal education reflects a commitment to both technical skill and creative exploration. She completed 3.5 years of study at the EAA (Ecole des Arts Appliqués), an industrial art school in Geneva, Switzerland, where she developed her foundational understanding of artistic techniques and materials. She later earned her BA in Illustration from Norwich University of the Arts (NUA), where she refined her distinctive approach to figurative drawing and developed her surrealist sensibilities. Her ultimate aspiration is to centre her life around her artistic practice, dedicating many hours each day to drawing and continuous creative development. She envisions her skills as a service to others, ready to meet whatever illustrative needs people might have while maintaining the integrity of her unique artistic voice.

Place and Unplace by Sam and Becka Elliott
8th to 20th July
Meet the Artists: 12th July 1-3pm

Sam and Becka are mother and son. Whilst their materials are very different, their processes are quite similar. A placing and replacing of pieces that previously had another form and purpose to create images which, whilst familiar may not be quite as the viewer knows them. Sam’s collage material is drawn from a variety of sources, including natural science books, wildlife guides, children’s encyclopedias and laydybird books; each supplying their own context and personal history. He redirects the viewer through the lens of a documentarian, creating a blurring of natural history and fantasy, science and science fiction, and attempts to pleasantly disorientate the audience. Becka’s work is created using old cups, plates, broken mirrors, beads, buttons, found natural materials and glass. Wherever possible, she uses second hand or donated materials. Her images are usually inspired by the colours and patterns of the materials themselves which then, without much planning at all, evolve into pieces that represent a love of the natural world, of favourite environments and of Norwich which she now regards as her forever place. If you are interested in learning how to make mosaics please follow Becka on Instagram @Rooted_Mosaics where any available workshops will be advertised. Sam Elliott is a Norwich based artist with a multi disciplinary approach, although in this exhibition he is showcasing a longstanding interest in collage. He relocated to Norwich almost a decade ago, and the unique backdrop of the city and the Norfolk countryside have proved fertile inspiration for this joint exhibition. In Place and Unplace, he uses recognisable landmarks of the immediate city and county and transports, or interrupts their presence, leaving the viewer to renegotiate their relationship with the familiar. Becka Elliott is an artist and freelance teacher who, for nearly twenty years has been making and creating in a variety of mediums. She first began mosaic making about twelve years ago when her subject matter was often quite simple. Throughout the years her practice has evolved; her work is now much more detailed and includes a wider range of materials although they are almost always second-hand or donated. Since moving to Norwich in 2019 she has become interested in portraying the environments she loves, and has loved, in both realistic and abstract ways.
